It was a lovely morning, I had the most heartwarming conversation with Abigail, a sweet and shy 6-year-old girl currently undergoing assessment for dyslexia.
It was evident that Abigail was struggling in reading, writing, and math at her kindergarten, trailing significantly behind her peers.
However, her teacher highlighted her exceptional talent in dance and hands-on activities.
This was Abigail’s second clinic visit for further assessments, aimed at providing me with deeper insights into how best to support her.
After confirming that her vision and hearing assessments were normal, I sought to better understand her social communication skills
Despite her initial shyness, our conversation soon blossomed into a meaningful connection.
“Abigail, who’s your favorite cartoon character?” I asked, breaking the ice with a smile.
“My Little Pony,” she replied in a soft voice, a shy grin spreading across her face, with a gentle nudge from her mom.
“A classic choice! My daughter was also a huge fan of My Little Pony when she was younger. And which little pony do you like the most?”
“Twilight Sparkle,” she answered, her eyes lighting up with admiration.
Now, I must confess, I knew little about the world of My Little Pony beyond its colorful characters and magical adventures.
“What makes Twilight Sparkle your favorite?” I inquired, genuinely curious.
“Because she’s smart,” Abigail answered.
“Smart in what way? What does she do?” I continued to probe.
“She reads books. Her house is like a library.” Abigail explained.
At that moment, I didn’t fully grasp the significance.
After wrapping up the clinic session with Abigail’s parents, providing recommendations for a cognitive assessment by a clinical psychologist, I sat in front of my desktop computer that afternoon, finalizing my clinical notes on Abigail.
Curiosity compelled me to ask ChatGPT about Twilight Sparkle. as I read ChatGPT’s answers… a flood of realization washing over me like a tidal wave. I couldn’t type another word.
